Thanks for great post ! I think using wordpress plugin will make your page load slowly. Instead of that, you only config into Wordpress Admin, as:

Go to Wp-admin, Settings => Permalinks,

Choose Custom Structure : /%postname%
Category base is: /
And Tags is: /

is it totaly 'break proof' from any permalink plugin/hack/structure ?

I tried the modification, but they didn't work.

Then I tried the "WP No Category Base", and it worked, once I read the installation notes... very unusual to just copy a file and not the folder:
1. Upload `no-category-base.php` to the `/wp-content/plugins/` directory
2. Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' menu in WordPress
3. That's it! You should now be able to access your categories via http://myblog.com/my-category/

It works perfectly out of the box, even on multisite.

Great fix thanks.
It works better then WP no category base that has problems with the redirects.

Do you know how can i use it to remove child categories as well?

Awesome fix, and one to be kept on hand, but Andrew is right - I set the category slug to . and problem solved... (I wish all my redirect issues were so simple!)

You could also set you Base Category to ".", isn't it man? If you set like this at the beginning the problem is solved, am I right?
